If you want to learn martial art so that you can use it for self defense, you should choose martial art that focuses on self defense. The way you train, strike, move and your mindset, everything has a huge impact when it comes to self defense.
When you fight to survive, there is no point of hitting and touching certain parts of the body to get a higher score. This is not about being a champion, it is about defending yourself and go back home alive.
Every martial art has its uniqueness and strength. Wing Chun is one of the realistic and effective martial arts for self defense. They call it Wing Chun System.
When someone punches you, you can move from the line of attack and punch him. You can block the punch and strike as well. If you are able to move outside the line of attack, you do not need to block that anymore. Then counter-attack right away. The attacker can do multiple punches, but when you attack, he will not get a chance to punch you at that moment.
Your footwork, stepping, and movement can give you the advantage to deal with a situation like this in a better way. If you cannot move, and you stand there trying to block, you can get hit in case the attacker does multiple punches.
When you fight, you understand what works best in that situation. Your opponent could have different skills, so do not think one technique will work in every situation.
You can use elbow strike against a straight punch. In this way, you can defend and attack at the same time. If you are able to do that, that can be very effective. But if you are not fast enough or do it very fast before reaching the punch, that punch can hit you. So should you use it? Well, it's up to you. If it does not work, you had better use other blocks and parry to defend the punch or simply move out of the line of attack.
When you think of Tai Chi, some of you see a picture like old people practice Tai Chi, every movement is done slowly. Stay calm and peaceful. So how is this going to work on self defense?
You can use the basic movement of Tai Chi to defend punch and attack the opponent. You can use Tai Chi movement to get rid of some unfavorable situations.
Since everything situation is different, there are some situations where you cannot make any obvious move, but you have to defend yourself. There are time and place for everything to use in order to defend yourself and go back home alive.
